Christie Lake Conservation Area – Pond Decommissioning and Fish Habitat Improvement

PROJECT:      Christie Lake Conservation Area Pond Decommissioning and Fish Habitat Improvement Project

CLIENT:          Hamilton Conservation Authority

NUMBER OF YEARS DEALING WITH CLIENT: +/- 12 years

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:

  • Water’s Edge was authorized by Hamilton Conservation Area (HCA) to complete an assessment of three Spencer Creek tributaries containing seven manmade online ponds.
  • Subsequently, Water’s Edge prepared a design of the pond removals and the rehabilitation of the ponds back to flowing tributaries and natural conditions using natural channel design principles and bioengineering applications.
  • The design developed a corridor consisting of a sinuous riffle-pool channel with wetland connects and the inclusion of instream structures such as drop logs, rootwads, sweepers and LUNKERS to enhance fish habitat.
  • The project also included three road crossings and three pedestrian crossings. Over 300 metres of channel were created/restored in addition to the creation of various wetlands and backwater areas.
  • Water’s Edge prepared the CAD drawings (Plan/Profile, Grading, Erosion & Sediment Control, Revegetation, Staging and Details), the tender package, and also supervised construction.

TIMING AND DURATION OF INVOLVEMENT:  Project Phase 1 initiated in 2013 with construction of Pond 1 while Phase 6 was completed in April 2018.
