East Carlton Creek Channel Realignment – Commercial Development in Markham

PROJECT:  East Carlton Creek Channel Realignment – Commercial Development in Markham

NUMBER OF YEARS DEALING WITH CLIENT: +/-10 Years

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:

  • Commercial development project in the City of Markham required the realignment for 225 metres of creek including a new road crossing.
  • Water’s Edge worked with the owner and design team to complete several rounds of coordination and review with the regulatory agencies in order to determine the best solution for the natural channel corridor.
  • The final corridor design included a meandering stream with a riffle pool sequence and enhancements such as woody debris in the riffles.
  • Water’s Edge also designed the wetland features in the corridor that captured ground water and future run-off from the development. The wetlands included habitat features such as boulder clusters, sunning logs, and brush piles.
  • The floodplain also includes pit and mound topography for increased riparian habitat.
  • Water’s Edge provided inspection and coordination throughout the construction phase.

TIMING AND DURATION OF INVOLVEMENT:  The project assessment and design phase was initiated in 2015 and construction of the corridor was completed in September 2023.  Monitoring of the constructed channel is ongoing for at least 5 years post construction.
