PROJECT: Flamborough Centre Park Wetland
CLIENT: Halton Conservation Authority
DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:
- Water’s Edge was authorized by Conservation Halton to complete a wetland design to restore an underutilized and abandoned City of Hamilton recreational park due to the seasonal highwater table.
- The recreational park in Flamborough Centre is located at the intersection of the 6th Concession East and Centre Road in the City of Hamilton and is to be converted from non-native mown lawn into a mix of swamp, riparian, and marsh ecosystems.
- The proposed wetland design includes habitat features and undulating terrain of varying elevations in the wetland area.
- After a culvert capacity assessment, it was recommended to increase the diameter of the existing culvert to 1000mm to improve the flow conveyance. The culvert was also repositioned into a naturally occurring break in the vegetation.
- A floodplain assessment was completed using HEC-RAS. The model demonstrated that the new wetland would not cause upstream or downstream locations to experience increased flooding.
