PROJECT: Wellesley Pond Enhancement
CLIENT: Township of Wellesley & Friends of Wellesley Pond
DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:
- Water’s Edge was authorized by the Township of Wellesley to characterize Wellesley Pond, complete conceptual plans, and detailed design plans for pond enhancement.
- First, Water’s Edge completed a background review of the project site and water bodies (Firella Creek & Campbell Drain) contributing to the pond.
- Further to the initial desktop assessment and background review, field reconnaissance and topographic, bathymetric, and geomorphic surveys of the study area were undertaken.
- Subsequently, Water’s Edge prepared a design of the pond removals and the rehabilitation of the ponds back to flowing tributaries and natural conditions using natural channel design principles and bioengineering applications.
- The design developed a corridor consisting of a sinuous riffle-pool channel with wetland connections and the inclusion of instream structures such as drop logs, root wads, sweepers, and LUNKERS to enhance fish habitat.
- The project also includes three road crossings and three pedestrian crossings. Over 300 metres of the channel were created/restored in addition to the creation of various wetlands and backwater areas.
- Water’s Edge prepared the CAD drawings (Plan/Profile, Grading, Erosion & Sediment Control, Revegetation, Staging, and Details), the tender package, and supervised construction.
SERVICES PROVIDED: Project Management, Geomorphic & Topographic Survey, Fluvial Geomorphology Assessment & Natural Channel Design, Civil Engineering (grading design, road, culvert, and outlet designs)
DATE OF PROJECT: 2017-2018
