PROJECT: Farewell Creek Design – Build
CLIENT: City of Oshawa
DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:
- Water’s Edge, in conjunction with Cambridge Landscaping and Construction Ltd., was engaged by the City of Oshawa to complete a Design-Build of Farewell Creek. Previous studies had identified various eroding banks and a failing gabion basket retaining wall in this sensitive coldwater trout stream.
- During the proposal stage, Water’s Edge surveyed the site and prepared a 30% design so that an accurate approach would be fully understood by all parties and that an accurate assessment of quantities and costs could be made.
- The final design was subsequently submitted to DFO and the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (CLOCA) for their review and approval.
- The design was unique in that the proposed channel would be constructed offline with a temporary by-pass channel.
- Our design included a full realignment of the channel, extensive re-use of woody debris, vernal pools in the abandoned channel sections, and compensation plantings.
- The channel construction has been completed. In-water works were completed by September 15, 2022 (the closing of the coldwater timing window).
- Water’s Edge will be monitoring the completed works for 3 years post-construction.
